Prior to making any specific arrangements, we will ask you to provide us with the following information:

The documents need to be in English or German, or with an English or German translation if the originals are not in English or German. Once we have received the information, our medical team will review and discuss your case, and contact you by telephone for a personal consultation.

Based on the information received, we will draft an individual treatment plan and cost estimate for you. Please note that the final treatment plan/cost estimate will be composed once you have arrived at the clinic and after completion of a physical exam and further diagnostic exams, if applicable.

The Hallwang Private Oncology Clinic offers 16 spacious single or twin bed rooms (for you and your family members), with modern furniture, some with balcony and a wonderful view of the enchanting natural surroundings. There is a generously dimensioned suite available on the top floor. All rooms and the suite are pleasantly light and airy, and all rooms have large bathrooms. Each room has a flat-screen, tv, telephone and wi-fi connection. Furthermore, we provide towels, hair dryers and shower items. You are welcome to use our fitness room and physiotherapy department at any time.

Briefly summarized, our focus is on individualized treatment concepts. Concepts are based on individual information that we retrieve from a number of diagnostic tests that give us information on surface markers, individual mutations, amplifications, translocations etc. presented by the patient’s tumor cells. Identification of these allows us to specifically target tumor cells through a broad range of therapeutic options. You have to look at the tumor itself to understand what targeted treatment the patient can benefit from. A treatment that might work for one cancer patient, does not necessarily work for another patient, even though they have both the same type of cancer.

Diagnostic tests and analyses – Explanation of terms

Genomic profiling (GP)

GP is a high-throughput DNA sequencing technology, and one of the greatest advances in the biological sciences in the last decades. Medical research, and especially the cancer field is at the forefront of these efforts given the genetic aspects of the disease. We have integrated GP into our clinical cancer diagnostics to evaluate individualized treatment options by targeting specific genes and mutations, depending on your GP results.

Analyses for tumor-associated-antigens (TAA-Screening)

As essential part of our most advanced personalized treatment approach, we recommend a Tumor Associated Antigen (TAA) – screening that enables the analysis of tumor associated antigens. It is known that tumors show the accumulation of several genetic modifications, thus providing cancer cells with the selective growth advantage to initiate expansion. Now, sophisticated high-throughput technologies enable the identification of these mutated genes and TAAs in cancers, leading to potent targeted immunotherapy.

Analyses of DNA-repair/break-chain mechanism

Impaired DNA mismatch repair can be found in tumor tissues. Presence of DNArepair/break-chain mechanism may influence prognosis and response to immune therapies. 

Analysis of tumor mutational burden / Immune predict

Tumor Mutational Burden, or TMB, is a new, quantitative clinical marker that can help predict responses to certain cancer immunotherapies. Therefore, a genomic profiling is performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples, whilst in parallel the DNA and RNA from the same sample is analyzed for interrogating single nucleotide variants, amplifications, splice variants, and fusions in a single sequencing run. 

Blood-genotyping

Blood-genotyping allows for characterization of specific proteins on white blood cells. Depending on the genotype, specific immunotherapeutic strategies can be evaluated. 

Liquid biopsy

Tumors shed fragments of DNA into the bloodstream, a fact that can potentially be used to: 

  • Non-invasively screen for early-stage cancers

  • Monitor responses to treatment

  • Explain treatment resistance of some tumors

In many cases, a tissue biopsy is hard on the patient, as it is painful, or even potentially risky for the patient. The development of non-invasive methods to detect and monitor tumors is a major challenge in oncology. Cell-free circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are plasma sources of tumor DNA ctDNA liquid biopsy reveals specific molecular changes that occur in the tumor. 

Circulating-tumor-cells (CTCs)

Recent scientific advances allow for isolation and molecular characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the peripheral blood of cancer patients. Studies on CTCs have enabled the identification of heterogeneous drug resistance mechanisms that can coexist in treatment refractory tumors. CTC analyses can be used for noninvasive monitoring in patients, showing presence of tumor cells over time. Analysis of CTCs has important clinical implications for understanding and predicting the development of treatment resistance in a variety of solid tumors, potentially leading to optimal design of treatment strategies. 

Circulating-tumor-DNA (ctDNA)

Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) isolated from peripheral blood may be used as a biomarker to detect gene mutations. Knowledge of certain mutations is important for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cancer. 

Chemosensitivity testing of the next generation – 2D model

Chemosensitivity testing involves the analysis of circulating tumour cells (CTCs), and enables us to tailor an individualized cancer treatment for you. In this test, cultures of CTCs are exposed to a wide range of available cancer therapy agents, including conventional chemotherapeutic agents, antibodies and biological, Also, the cell’s resistance or sensitivity to treatment is analysed. Sensitivity to treatment can be calculated by measuring the extent to which a chemotherapy agent induces destruction of cultured cells. Also, resistant mechanisms present in the culture of CTCs can be evaluated. Mechanisms of resistance may be responsible for the failure of primary therapy and therefore are a promising target for individualized anti-cancer therapy. 

 

Overall, the chemosensitivity test provides a panel of treatment options with objective evidence of treatment efficacy for the individual patient.

Therapies – Explanation of terms

Immunotherapies, including: checkpoint-antibodies (anti-CTLA-4 & anti-PD-1/L-1 antibodies), trifunctional antibodies, ADC’s, vaccination strategies, among others)

Checkpoint blocking antibodies, directed against cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) and programmed death 1 receptor (PD-1), have shown to be one of  the most promising approaches to activating therapeutic antitumour immunity in the treatment of an expanding list of malignancies. Checkpoint blocking antibodies have shown great success already in clinical studies. By blocking CTLA-4 and PD-1, these checkpoint antibodies enhance the function of T cells to fight cancer cells.


Trifunctional antibodies trigger an immediate immune response as well generation of immune memory cells + measuring of T cell activity

Antibody-drug conjugates or ADCs are an important class of highly potent biopharmaceutical drugs designed as a targeted therapy for cancer treatments. Unlike chemotherapy, ADCs are intended to target and kill only cancer cells and spare healthy cells. ADCs are complex molecules composed of an antibody linked to a biologically active cytotoxic (anticancer) drug. 

Vaccination-Strategies – immunomodulating/educating therapies with multiple activities, i.e. including modulation of immune cell compartments, complement activation, suppression of various inflammatory mediators, including cytokines, chemokines, and metalloproteinases, or effectively activates apoptosis and conquer immunosuppression

Anti-hormone treatment

Antihormone therapy is a type of hormone therapy that suppresses selected hormones or their effects, in contrast with hormone replacement therapy, which encourages hormone activity. Antihormone activity is usually achieved by antagonizing their function (with a hormone antagonist) and sometimes by preventing their production. The suppression of certain hormones can be beneficial to patients with certain cancers, because certain hormones prompt or help the growth of a tumor. This is especially true in cancers relating to the sex organs. Antihormone treatment is thus often specific to sex. For example, androgen deprivation therapy using antiandrogens is important in treating prostate cancer. Breast cancer, which occurs in both women and men but whose disease burden falls mostly on women, also can be treated in certain cases with estrogen deprivation therapy using antiestrogens, antiprogesterone therapies or aromatase inhibitors.

Wholebody-Hyperthermia

Hyperthermia activates the body’s self-regulating forces and stimulates the immune system. Furthermore, certain drugs can be better absorbed/perfused.

Radiotherapy (i.e. Cyberknife, Proton therapy) and Nuclear medicine (i.e. Radiopeptide therapy)

i. e. Cyberknife is one of the most advanced and unique form of radiosurgery that uses highly sophisticated computer technology to deliver radiation with extreme precision to tumors anywhere in the body, without the use of uncomfortable screws or frames to immobilize patients during the procedure.


During Cyberknife treatment, radiation beams target the tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike surgery, tumors are not removed, but destroyed by a precise dose of radiation. No incision is made. Another major advantage is that the radiation beams adjust in real-time to a patient’s breathing cycle, which is important, as some tumors keep moving during treatment application.


Cyberknife might be an effective non-invasive alternative to surgery in the treatment of certain cancers.

Optimized conventional chemotherapy (i.e. small molecule)

Targeted cancer drugs are designed to interfere with specific molecules that the tumor needs for growth and progression. Traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy usually kills rapidly dividing cells in the body by interfering with cell division. A main goal of targeted therapies is to eliminate cancer cells with more accuracy and therefore fewer side effects.

Over the last decade, the discovery and development of small molecule cancer drugs has been revolutionised. Most importantly, we have moved from a general approach that mainly involved cytotoxic chemotherapy to a personalised medicine strategy that focuses on the development of molecular drugs in order to target specific genetic characteristics of cancer cells. While monoclonal antibodies target specific antigens found on the cell surface, such as transmembrane receptors or extracellular growth factors, small molecules can penetrate the cell membrane to interact with targets inside a cell.

Transarterial chemoembolization/-perfusion (TACE/P) and High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) of affected organs

TACE is a combination of transarterial embolisation and regional chemotherapy with the major advantage that chemotherapeutic drugs remain in the tumor tissue for a longer period at a higher concentration, while the embolotherapy interrupts the arterial blood flow to the tumor and inhibits washout of the injected chemotherapeutic drugs. TACE has been widely used in liver cancer, where selective arterial obstruction induces ischemic tumor necrosis while minimizing damage to the liver tissue, but can also be administered to other cancer-affected organs. The use of combination therapy results in lower systemic drug levels and therefore less toxicity. Thus, the combination of embolotherapy and regional chemotherapy offers a promising treatment option with synergistic and anti-tumor effects.

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive technology used to treat tumor masses by high intensity ultrasound that induces coagulative thermal necrosis due to the absorption of ultrasound energy in tissue. HIFU is being used to treat a variety of solid malignant tumors, including tumors of the pancreas, liver, prostate, breast, uterus, and certain sarcomas. Its main advantage are non-invasion, non-ionization, and fewer complications after treatment.

Orthomolecular medicine and micronutrients

Good nutrition is important for our health. The goal of orthomolecular medicine is to provide the optimal molecular environment for the brain and other organs by changing/improving the intake of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other naturally occurring substances. Orthomolecular is a term that comes from the Greek word for “correct” (ortho) and “molecule,” so it literally means the “right molecule.” According to Nobel Prize winner and molecular biologist, Linus Pauling, Ph.D., orthomolecular medicine involves the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances which are natural to the body. Orthomolecular medicine aims to restore the ideal and beneficial environment of the body by correcting molecular imbalances, and this approach is used in cancer, infections, depression and atherosclerosis, among others.


Micronutrients are substances often referred to as vitamins or minerals. They are required only in minuscule amounts, but are important for production of enzymes, hormones and other substances that are needed for proper growth and development. Even though only little amounts are needed, their deficiency has severe consequences. Important micronutrients are for example iodine, vitamin A, iron, folate and zinc. At Hallwang Private Oncology Clinic, we follow the principle of orthomolecular medicine that medicine and patients are individual- not only is every patient unique but also his or her nutrient requirements and the response to treatment. For every patient, we provide a balanced mix of micronutrients, in oral or high-dose intravenous form

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential vitamin. It is a potent antioxidant which helps to protect against free radical damage to our proteins, fats, carbohydrates, DNA and RNA. Vitamin C is used to boost the immune system.


Selenium is a trace mineral that is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It plays an important role in the antioxidant defense system of the cell and is therefore used for its immune-supportive effects.


Zinc – Zinc is an important trace mineral that is also crucial for a proper working immune system. Zinc is required for cellular metabolism, and plays a pivotal role in protein and DNA synthesis, wound healing, and cell division.


L-ornithine aspartate is an amino acid that improves liver detoxification, and is already widely used in clinics to treat patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy, as this amino acid reduces ammonia levels by increasing hepatic ammonia disposal and its peripheral metabolism.


Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that is not only used to boost the immune system, but also for patients that suffer from periphereal neuropathy, a common side effect from chemotherepeutic drugs, or a symptom often presented in diabetes. It also used in the treatment of cancer, infections, and neurological diseases.

Glutathione is also a very strong antioxidant as it prevents cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals or heavy metals. It is sometimes even described as the strongest among the wide number of antioxidants and detoxifying enzymes, as it is crucial for the defense and maintenance of the appropriate mitochondrial redox environment to repair oxidative modifications leading to mitochondrial dysfunction or cell death. It protects your DNA from damage and maintains optimal immunity. It also neutralizes and clears heavy metals and toxins from the body. Glutathione is also associated with anti-aging benefits.

Ozone therapy and Hyperbaric chamber

With ozone therapy, ozone gas is used to treat medical conditions. Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent. While high concentrations can be toxic, small ozone doses may increase naturally occurring antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help to eliminate malignant calles and are needed to keep the body healthy. Ozone used for treatment is known for its bactericidal, fungicidal and virostatic properties. It also stimulates circulation and immune functions, and revitalizes the body.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat several medical conditions. It is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, skin lesions or radiation injury. Wounds for example need oxygen to heal properly, and exposing a wound to 100 percent oxygen can improve and speed the healing process. This has been shown in a number of studies. The goal of this treatment is to increase the amount of oxygen your blood can carry in order to restore normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and cure infection. During Hyperbaric oxygen therapy you breathe 100% oxygen while under increased atmospheric pressure.

At the beginning of your stay with us, you will meet our staff and learn your way around the clinic and area. A professional team of nurses will look after you throughout your treatment. They act as your contact for anything you need, and create an atmosphere where you feel completely comfortable and totally confident that you are in good hands. The first consultation with your medical team at our clinic include:

  • Collecting and organising all the relevant information about your health based on the reports you have already sent us. This includes questions about your health, medication, allergies, previous surgeries and (chemo-) therapy.

  • The second part of the consultation requires a physical examination.

  • Your treatment plan is then discussed and explained (based on the draft you already received per email). If you are unsure about what to expect, please stop and ask. We are happy to go over the information as many times as needed in order to make you feel comfortable with the treatment strategy.

  • The final part of the consultation requires making further appointments as discussed in the plan, some of them might have been already organised beforehand, based on prior communication (e.g. appointments for radiation, transarterial chemoperfusion, diagnostic scans, etc.)

It was around the year 1075, when the knight Rudolf de Haldewang was the proud lord of the castle that the first farms sprang up in the sloping meadows that lay in the shadow of the castle. It was a peaceful, sunny idyll, bounded on the lower side by the river Kübelbach. Here in this tranquil rural valley, full of sun and lush verdant growth, the Engeltal Monastery was built in the latter part of the 13th century. Its name, which translates as valley of the angels’, is a perfect description of the wonderful climate and charm of present-day Hallwangen. We no longer know to what extent medicinal herbs and healing arts were used by the monks and nuns, but anyone who finds in Hallwangen a path to new strength and health is sure to feel that they could well have played a role.
